The USS Nimitz is Coming Home!

The USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has relieved the USS Nimitz in the North Arabian Sea and the Nimitz will be making its way home to San Diego.
The Nimitz, along with the USS Pinkney and the USS Rentz, made a port call in Phuket, Thailand for a few days of well deserved R & R. Sailors availed themselves of beautiful beaches, elephant rides, good Thai food, and other tourist attractions.
The Nimitz Strike Group had operated in the area since September, 2009. Friends and relatives of Nimitz sailors can welcome their sailors home with these Welcome Home USS Nimitz T-shirts and Gifts:

The coordinator of our project received a nice letter from J. W. Miller, Rear Admiral, US Navy, Commander, Carrier Strike Group 11.

It's a little difficult to read so here is what it says:

I thought the sailors would like the stockings and goody bags but I am surprised at the number of nice notes and letters some of our members got back. Some of the sailors even sent Nimitz coins in return. I know they are very busy and often very tired and we just wanted to let them know that they were being thought of by people back home.

USS Carl Vinson Sailors Volunteer to Help Provide Water for Haiti

The Carl Vinson has been playing an important role in providing relief to the Haitian victims of the 7.0 earthquake. U.S. Navy Captain Bruce H. Lindsey, the USS Carl Vinson’s commanding officer says “As long as there are injured people needing our care, we will stay here as long as it takes.”

In addition to tending the wounded, the ship has delivered medical supplies and more than 30,000 gallons of water to the island. The ship has a complement of helicopters that can transport people, supplies and equipment.

According to a Department of Defense article: “A group of sailors on the ship created a water tree, where they took piping and created spigots, and use the supply of water from the ship to fill containers with water for those in need in Haiti.

Lindsey said sailors volunteered their time to do build the water tree and fill 5 gallon jugs with water by hand. Because of their volunteer efforts each helicopter that leaves the ship has 32 of these jugs on flight.”

Like all aircraft carriers, the USS Carl Vinson has the ability to make 400,000 gallon of fresh water from sea water every day.

USS Enterprise sends Sailors to Haiti

The Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, the USS Enterprise, which is currently in the Newport News Shipyard undergoing maintenance, will be sending 47 sailors to Haiti to assist in relief efforts.
Eleven are French-Creole speakers who will be doing translating on the hospital ship, the USNS Comfort. According to Navy.mil, there will be “air traffic controllers, aviation boatswain’s mates, ship’s servicemen, information systems technicians and several sailors from various specialties who will serve in general duties.” Despite having very little notice, when the call came the volunteer response from the sailors was overwhelming.

Kudos to the Enterprise sailors who are helping out in Haiti!

The 17th Amendment

Did you know that US Senators were originally appointed by the state legislatures? It seems strange to us now but this was part of the system of checks and balances intended to make the people more secure and keep the government limited. It would keep the states sovereign and would protect the people from abuses by either the state or federal government. People would have recourse from abuse by either. The Senators would be able to veto any legislation from the House of Representatives that threatened states' rights.

The protection of states’ rights was completely lost with the passage of the 17th amendment in 1913, which said that Senators would be elected by popular vote. States lost all representation on a Federal level. We really now have two Houses of Representatives and nothing can protect states from usurpation of their rights by the Federal government.

We need to teach the history of the founders and the making of the Constitution if we expect to keep our republic free. Otherwise we become sheep and unknowingly allow the wolves to steal our freedom and protection.

Ted Kennedy's Senate Seat

Democratic voters jumped ship in Massachusetts today as they elected Republican Scott Brown to fill Ted Kennedy's senate seat. One more Republican senator means that the Democrats do not have a filibuster proof majority in the senate any longer. The future of the health care bill now seems to be in jeopardy. One wonders what this election means for Barack Obama. Obama campaigned in Massachusetts for the Democrat Martha Coakley, as did former President Bill Clinton but to no avail. Voters who were surveyed said they did not like having the health care bill stuffed down their throats. Many said they were really voting against Obama rather than for Scott Brown. It remains to be seen if this an ill omen for the Democrats in the midterm elections. In any case, there is a new order in Massachusetts politics and it is a breath of fresh air.

USS Nimitz Tiger Cruise 2010

What is a Tiger Cruise? When an aircraft carrier is coming home from deployment they give relatives a chance to meet the ship and cruise the rest of the way home with them. The relatives are called "Tigers." The families sleep in bunks just like the sailors. No fancy guest rooms on a war ship! They eat in the same galley as the sailor. No fancy restaurants either!

The Nimitz is coming home in a few months and they are already planning the Tiger Cruise. Participants have to be medically screened as there are a lot of steep stairs (ladders) and they will be doing a LOT of walking. They are advised of safety rules to follow while on board, such as to wear sensible clothing. No high heels and they don't recommend skirts.

In the words of Nimitz Captain Monger:
"On behalf of the entire crew of the USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) and Carrier Air Wing ELEVEN, it is my pleasure to invite you to join us for 'Operation TIGER CRUISE 2010.'
'Tiger Cruise' is the Navy's name for a very special guest cruise program. A ship returning from deployment is permitted to embark relatives and friends of crewmembers, (Tigers), eight years of age or older, for a Tiger Cruise.
The cruise provides an opportunity for family and friends to see and participate in our daily shipboard routine. It is always action packed, informative and a fantastic way to end a very successful deployment.
USS NIMITZ and CVW 11 will host a Tiger Cruise as we transit home in March 2010. We plan to demonstrate to the Tigers most every aspect of what this national asset does while at sea. I can guarantee you an exciting time and a once in a lifetime opportunity to cruise aboard a US Navy warship."

If you have a sailor on the Nimitz I encourage you to go on the Tiger Cruise 2010. Last March the Nimitz hosted a Friends and Family Day Cruise in San Diego and it was very worthwhile. Not only did we get to see our sailor, but we saw what an awesome ship the Nimitz is. We cruised out to sea and they put on a fantastic air show, we saw about 200 dolphins, they fed us well and we had a great time.

US Support for Haiti following 7.0 Earthquake

I am amazed at the amount of disaster relief that is being sent to Haiti by the US Navy. A “Sea Base” is being assembled off the coast of Haiti including ships that make it uniquely configured to offer aid. It is anchored by the Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier, USS Carl Vinson which, like all US carriers, has a 4.5 acre flight deck.

The medical staff on the USS Carl Vinson is treating patients in their state of the art 50-bed medical clinic. Doctors from the USS Carl Vinson also went onshore to treat patients in an impromptu clinic on the beach. A Haitian baby was born aboard a Coast Guard cutter, child of a woman who had been rescued. Mother and baby along with other Haitians were later transferred to the Carl Vinson medical facility. The primary mission of the Vinson is to ferry personnel and supplies by helicopter but they are filling in the gap until the hospital ship, the USNS Comfort arrives. The Comfort has a 1000 bed facility as well as state of the art equipment.

Injured Haitians have been flown to the US Naval Hospital at Guantanamo Bay to be treated and stabilized before being transferred to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami.

US helicopters have been dropping water, Gatorade, bandages and MREs.

I have only mentioned the response from the Navy. The US Southern Command has established a task force called Operation Unified Response. The Army, Air Force, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard are all assisting with relief operations. The Air Force is working on getting the Haitian airport repaired. The soldiers are providing security on the ground to control looting and rioting and to ensure the orderly distribution of supplies. The US military is assessing the need and coordinating efforts from the US and internationally. Currently there are 5000 US military personnel in Haiti and on Monday there will be 7500 more. Our military is an awesome war machine but they are also uniquely suited to be first responders in disasters such as this one.

This is only the military response. As I make my daily rounds of the internet I see many sites facilitating donations for Haiti. My Points, Swag Bucks, Zazzle, Squidoo, Kmart and Amazon are just a few of the internet sites offering a way to donate to the Haiti relief effort. I've also seen that local communities have efforts underway to help the victims in Haiti. Americans always step up to the plate when disaster strikes. It touches my heart to witness the generous spirit of the American people.

When I see a US response of this magnitude it makes me wonder why countries around the world hate us so much. It is the wealth created within the free enterprise system that gives us the resources to support an operation of this size. It will be very, very expensive and I have not heard anyone complaining about the cost. I wonder how much aid is coming from communist and socialist countries that despise capitalism? I heard that Hugo Chavez of Venezuela sent one planeload of supplies. How much did Saudi Arabia, the richest country in the world send? What about China or Russia? The world knows that they can count on the US to be there in time of need and they know we will be equipped to get the job done.

Have you ever read a book that was so illuminating that you had to share it? The 5000 Year Leap was like that for me. I thought I was pretty knowledgeable about the United States Constitution but after reading this book I realized there was a LOT I did not know. Our founding fathers were amazing men and they produced an amazing document in the Constitution. It has a solution for everything and many of our country’s problems could be solved if we would apply a Constitutional remedy.

The National Center for Constitutional Studies distributes a video class on the Constitution with The 5000 Year Leap as a text. We have several of these classes going on in our community. My husband and I completed this course and we highly recommend it to anyone. It would be perfect for home school co-ops and could be counted as government, civics, or history. The teaching is done for you by the videos. We have allowed the teaching of this important part of our history to be removed from public schools. We need to resume teaching our nation’s children this vital information.

The US Sends Humanitarian Aid to Haiti after a 7.0 Magnitude Earthquake

The USS Carl Vinson, a Nimitz Class aircraft carrier, just came out of dry dock and finished her sea trials. She had left Hampton, Virginia and was headed to her new home port of San Diego to join the USS Ronald Reagan and the USS Nimitz on the west coast. Then came the news of the devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti. Fortuitously, the Carl Vinson was in the area and in a position to help. The carrier will arrive in Haiti today.
Assisting in humanitarian efforts is part of the mission for aircraft carriers. Whenever a “situation” pops up, whether it is war related or a natural disaster, the first question asked in Washington is, “Where is the nearest carrier?”

Carl Vinson will stop in Mayport, Florida to pick up supplies and helicopters. The helicopters will transport relief workers, supplies, and heavy equipment.

In addition:

1. The army has sent 3500 troops from the 82nd Airborne and 3 amphibious ships to accompany the Carl Vinson to Haiti.
2. Our Air Force has sent a special operations team to help get Haiti’s airport up and running.
3. Several Coast Guard Cutters are off the coast of Haiti, ready to help.
4. The USNS Comfort, a hospital ship, is standing by, ready to go if called. The Comfort carries 650 medical personnel as well as supplies and equipment.
5. A large deck amphibious ship with an expeditionary force of Marines is ready. There are a total of 7 navy ships either on the way or standing ready.

This is just a part of the military humanitarian response from the US. There will also be teams from fire departments around the country such as the 72 man elite urban search and rescue team from Los Angeles. They are carrying literally tons of equipment, search and rescue dogs, as well as water and food so they can be self sufficient in Haiti. You can bet that there will be US churches and charities sending people, supplies, and millions of dollars to Haiti too. It is what we do.

I am very saddened by the destruction and loss of life in Haiti, but our response to this tragedy makes me very proud of my country.

Feedback for the Navy for Moms Holiday Project

The Nimitz moms on the Navy for Moms website initiated a project to send a stocking or a goody bag to each sailor in the Nimitz entourage, Carrier Strike Group 11. We had others join us along the way, some who did not even have a sailor in the strike group. It was a successful project and now we have some feedback from the sailors.

appreciate the time that you put into not only the baggy but the hand
written note. We know that you support us but when the Home front lets
us know that we are in their hearts it makes a world of difference on

Banning School Prayer

Have you ever wondered what the consequences were of banning school prayer in 1962? Did you know there is a correlation between the banning of school prayer and the rise in crime in this country? Based on statistics from different government agencies we can see that there is a rise in teen pregnancy, divorce, rape, violent crime, and single parent households, all of them going steadily up since 1962. There has been a similar decline in SAT scores and the standing of US students compared to the rest of the world.

That decision by the Supreme Court in 1962 changed the legal and moral climate of our country and not in a good way. Perhaps we should consider bringing this simple prayer back to our schools:

"Almighty God we acknowledge our dependence upon Thee, and we beg Thy blessings upon us, our parents, our teachers, and our Country."

A Fallen Hero, Aaron Aamot

Our county had its first casualty in Afghanistan last week. The body of 22 year old Aaron Aamot was brought home today (November 12, 2009).

Hundreds (some news reports said thousands) of people lined Main Street, most of them holding flags or signs. There was a fire truck on either side of Main street. Their extended ladders met over the street and a huge American flag was suspended from them.

When word was received that the motorcade was on its way, traffic was blocked off of Main Street. First there were 5 or 6 motorcycle cops with all their lights on. They were followed by the hearse carrying the flag draped casket, then cars driven by the military escorts carrying the family members. There were many police cars, fire trucks, ambulances, and state troopers cars all with lights blazing. Following all that there were about 60 motorcycles.

As the motorcade passed, everyone became very quiet. Some removed their hats, some saluted. I stood there with tears streaming down my face. I did not expect to get so emotional about it. I did not know the young man and I do not know the family. Maybe it is because I have a 22 year old son currently serving on a ship that is providing air support for the ground troops in Afghanistan. Maybe it was because I was thinking of this grieving family. I read that the family is Christian and they said this is only a temporary separation. I'm glad that they have that. I don't know how you get through something like this otherwise.

Navy for Moms Christmas Project

The USS Nimitz along with Carrier Strike Group 11 deployed in July of this year and is in the Indian Ocean supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. The strike group was recently informed that their deployment would be extended from 6 months to 8 months.

A group of moms on Navy For Moms has taken on the task of providing a Christmas stocking or goody bag to each sailor in Carrier Strike Group 11. The strike group is made up of the USS Nimitz, The USS Chosin, The USS Sampson, and the USS Rentz as well as several air wings.

Many groups across the country are helping us. There are realtors, ladies’ groups, Boy Scouts, school children, American Legion, VFW, Moose Lodges, Elks, Wal-Marts, Targets, K-Marts and others. The cost of this project will be more than $10,000 for bags, candy, other goodies and postage. We appreciate the generous support of all who have donated!

These gifts will serve as a “Thank You” as well as a holiday wish to our sailors who cannot be home for Christmas this year. Read more about it at Navy for Moms Holiday Project

Tea Party

Yesterday, October 21, 2009 my husband and I attended a Tea Party in Bellingham, Washington. For an hour and a half we stood on the sidewalk in the pouring rain on the Guide Meridian and held our signs. Along with hundreds of others we protested about high taxes, excessive spending, property rights, and the unresponsiveness of government. We still have free speech and the right to peaceably assemble and that is what the Tea Parties are all about. There was no violence, only people expressing their dissatisfaction with their government.
No one can do everything but everyone can do something. What can you do?

Ruler's Law or People's Law?

In America today when we think of a political spectrum we think of one side as “The Left” and the other side as “The Right.” Something like this:

The Founding Fathers used a different spectrum. Theirs looked like this:

Rulers Law....................................No Law

This is a more accurate representation of the political spectrum in any country. The goal of the founding fathers was to have People’s Law. They aimed to put the government in the Balanced Center of this spectrum. Their first attempt at government was the Articles of Confederation. It was soon evident that in their effort to avoid tyranny at all costs, they had placed the government too close to anarchy. They didn’t have the three branches of government and there was no taxing power or enforcement laws. There were not enough laws in place even to keep Washington’s army at Valley Forge outfitted with food and supplies. The central government was too weak to provide for the men fighting the Revolutionary War. From this the founding fathers learned that the government had to be more thoughtfully structured.

The 5000 Year Leap

The educational framework in this country needs a new paradigm. We certainly throw a lot of money at education. Yet year after year we graduate young adults that can barely read, cannot put together a coherent paragraph, and who have no knowledge of the founding of the United States. In one high school I know of they spent five weeks on a “me project” in health class meant to build self esteem. Five weeks of cutting pictures out of magazines to make a “me collage” and making a stress ball out of a balloon filled with flour. When I was in school this might possibly have been a second grade project, but certainly not something for the high school level. At the same time the students do not know what the Alamo was and cannot name our first president.

There is a book that every American citizen should read. It is called The 5000 Year Leap by W. Cleon Skousen. Instead of spending those precious 5 weeks on a silly self esteem class why not spend it on learning something truly important and relevant. This book should be required reading for every high school and college student. Every adult who did not learn these things in school needs to read this book. The author has thoroughly researched the thought processes, studies, and the considerations that the founding fathers took into account when they were building the foundation of this country. If this is something that you have not learned and if you know something is deeply wrong with the USA but you don't know what, then you need to read this book. Get this book, read it and then share it.

A Letter from the Military Moms of America

The Military Moms group on As a Mom...A Sisterhood of Mommy Patriots has put together a letter to start a Silent Campaign on Washington. If you agree with this letter you may copy it and send it to President Obama.

Dear Mr. President,

Allow us to introduce ourselves: We are military moms.

As moms, we send our sons, daughters, husbands, and other family members to Afghanistan and other lands to protect the freedom of the United States. We love our country and while we can see it has problems, as moms we know they can be resolved by sticking to our founding principles, facing our problems directly and acting on sound solutions, making sure we teach our children in the process.

As the mothers of our troops, we were often our soldiers’ first example of leadership. We woke them for school in the mornings, helped them with their homework, encouraged them to try again when they failed and praised them for their success. We taught them dignity, honor, decency and respect for others.

As mothers in uniform, we demonstrate to our children the measure of our devotion to our nation by fighting for its freedoms. We sacrifice a life at home with our kids so others can enjoy a life with theirs. We know our children are proud of the cause of freedom we have taken up.

As military spouses with young children, we struggle to find the words to explain why a loved one has gone away. We comfort and assure them that all is well, but we know that it is not. Often, we pick up the pieces after a family member has fallen, when we are just beginning the blessed journey of parenthood.

As mothers of the United States Armed Forces, we have had enough of your conduct in this war. Our children and spouses have sworn an oath to uphold the Constitution in this, your most important job – protecting the citizens of this great nation. Here is our cry: Either give our military the resources to win in Afghanistan or risk the lives of every American citizen. Our silence on this issue is no more; we are determined to speak out and be heard. On behalf of our loved ones, the troops, who have long been ignored, we say:

As mothers, we strive not only to identify a problem, but to present a solution as well. Mr. President, we exhort you to listen to your appointed military leaders on the ground. Give them the freedom to fight this war – not only to postpone an ignominious retreat, but to declare the victory that every member of the United States Armed Forces knows we can achieve.

Mr. President, while our soldiers are losing lives, limbs, and sustaining life-changing injuries, you are blatantly ignoring the condition of our solider abroad.

For this, we respectfully demand an explanation.

As moms, we do not turn our faces away from painful problems. Yet the situation in Afghanistan has taken a back seat in your agenda.

For this, we politely demand an answer.

We express gratitude that the First Lady has made it her personal mission to improve the lives of military families; it is valuable indeed to have an advocate so near the Commander in Chief.

We trust the women in your life have taught you well, President Obama, so we would expect nothing less than a personal response to our message.

More Government Takeover of Credit and Transportation

Now that you have seen the Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto and how we have pretty much adopted all of them, think about what George W. Bush, Barack Obama and the congress have done in the last year.

Massive bailouts and government takeovers including:
1. Bear Sterns 2008, $30 billion
2. Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac 2008, $400 billion
3. American International Group (A.I.G.) 2008, $180 billion
4. Auto Industry 2008, $630 billion
5. Troubled Asset Relief 2008, $700 billion
6. Citigroup 2008, $280 billion
7. Bank of America 2009, $142 billion

We see that we taxpayers have bailed out banks, mortgage companies and auto makers. There are rumblings that the government will take over student loans as well. Obama wants to nationalize health care. Do we want to be beholden to the government for personal loans, student loans, car loans, mortgages, and our health care? Here we see more centralization of credit in the hands of the state (Plank #5), and more government takeover of the transportation sector (Plank #6). I expect to see more of this in the Obama administration.

What does the Communist Manifesto have to do with Patriotic America? Have you ever read it? It was written by Karl Marx in 1848 and describes how to bring down capitalism and ruin a free enterprise system. The Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto are a test to see if a country has become communist. Is America going down this road? Let’s see how America stacks up against the Ten Planks of the Communist Manifesto.

1. Abolition of property in land and application of all rents to public purposes.
Have you ever tried not paying your property taxes? You really only rent your property from the government.

2. A heavy progressive or graduated income tax.
We all know about this one.

3. Abolition of all right of inheritance.
We have the Federal and State Estate Tax among others.

4. Confiscation of the property of all emigrants and rebels.
We see this in government seizures, tax liens etc.

5. Centralization of credit in the hands of the State, by means of a national bank with State capital and an exclusive monopoly.
This is the Federal Reserve. Every local bank belongs to the Federal Reserve who regulates all credit.

6. Centralization of the means of communication and transport in the hands of the state.
The Federal Communications Commission regulates cell phones, TV and radio among other things. The Department of Transportation, The Federal Aviation Administration, and State mandated driver’s licenses are other examples.

7. Extension of factories and instruments of production owned by the State; the bringing into cultivation of wastelands, and the improvement of the soil generally in accordance with a common plan.
Department of Agriculture, Environmental Protection Agency, Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and others.

8. Equal liability of all to labor. Establishment of industrial armies, especially for agriculture.
Social Security Administration, Department of Labor, Unions, etc.

9. Combination of agriculture with manufacturing industries; gradual abolition of the distinction town and country, by a more equable distribution of the population over the country.
Planning Reorganization Act of 1949 and others.

10. Free education for all children in public school. Abolition of children’s factory labor in its present form. Combination of education with industrial production.
Department of Education, the NEA and Outcome Based Education. Property taxes go to support public schools.

Literacy, Thomas Paine and the American Revolution

Did you know that "In 1750 nearly 90 percent of New England women (and virtually all men) could read and write, giving this region a higher literacy rate than any other area in Europe or America?" (source: MSN Encarta). Later on, newspapers printed the proceedings of Congress so people could keep up on what their representatives were doing and hold them accountable. Who does that today? Out of sight out of mind is how we treat our representatives and senators in Washington. We are much too busy with TV, movies, video games, computers and all of our other amusements to think about what our elected representatives are doing. We are happily oblivious while they are walking away with the candy store. No one is holding them accountable. Perhaps the high literacy rate in early America accounts for the success of the pamphlet by Thomas Paine called Common Sense, a little publication that helped to ignite the American Revolution. People read it, understood it and took action. Glenn Beck has written a book, also called Common Sense, inspired by Thomas Paine's writing. It is inspiring a new, modern, peaceful revolution.

It starts with education. Americans today know very little about the founding of our nation. An organization called Common Core took a survey of what American high schoolers know about history. The results were dismal. Common Core blamed it on six years of No Child Left Behind and George Bush. I concede that No Child Left Behind might possibly have been a factor, but I contend that it started way before that.

High schoolers in Oklahoma were given the citizenship test and only 3% would have passed on the first try as opposed to 92% of immigrants who pass on the first try. It is not just Oklahoma. This is a widespread problem.
